They have taken to heart Christ''s commandment, "Go and preach to all people, baptizing them and teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you." Prelature of Chetumal-Cancún In 1970 Pope Paul VI entrusted the Legion of Christ with the care of the Prelature of Chetumal-Cancún which covers 19,360 square miles of the state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico). Paul VI appointed Mons. Jorge Bernal Vargas, L.C., as its first prelate. Most of the natives in this region are Mayans whose population numbers approximately 850,000. They work as farmers or manual laborers. For their spiritual care, Bishop Bernal counts on the presence of 10% of all Legionary priests and numerous Regnum Christi lay coworkers. The Legionaries serving as missionaries have built approximately 230 churches and chapels since 1970. Some of the indigenous laity work as full-time catechists. EDUCATION The specific mission of the Legion of Christ and Regnum Christi Movement in the educational apostolate is summarized in the motto Integer homo; that is, providing its students with an integral formation. Our educational program consists of three essential elements: Teach: To teach means to provide the student with the intellectual capabilities, content, and skills needed to respond to the demands of today''s society. Educate: To educate means to train the student in the habit of intellectual rigor, structured reasoning, and in the appreciation of beauty; it means to cultivate sensitivity, memory, imagination; and finally, to develop art of communication and the ability to express oneself clearly and elegantly. Form: To form is to lead the student to become a person for others, with an upright ethical code, sensitivity toward the needs of others - especially the most disadvantaged - and an openness to human and spiritual values.
